Psychologists Denise Frick frick.denise@gmail.com and Clinton Gahwiler sportpsych@xsinet.co.za very kindly talked to us about their work in sport.

Clinton Gahwiler (BA Hons MA) has run the psychology practice of the Sports Science Institute since its inception in 1995. He has worked with many of South Africa's top individual athletes and teams, including being psychologist to the overall South African contingent at the 2004 Athens Olympics. His most recent project is the development of South Africa's first online mental skills training programme for athletes. (www.performingmind.co.za)

What percentage is needed for physical and mental to perform the best?  What percentage time is given to the mental?

There are things that we can not change or have no control over, and there are things that are in our control.  How are we managing the things that we can control?

The basic skills of Goal Setting, Focus / Concentration, Relaxing, and Balance were covered by Denise.

Time was spent on the Operational Excellence Model – Conscience , Sub Conscience and the Creative Sub Conscience. Clinton also shared on handling conflict,  and expectation vs performance.

This was a very worthwhile evening.  Thank you to all who participated , our speakers and the Sports Science Institute of South Africa.
